My review on the A77 won’t be out for a few weeks just running some tests.
Hey guys, I wanted you to know that I am running tests on the Sony A77 for those who are interested.
I am just posting this one test here so you know about it, but if you want to watch all of them you can watch them on my Vimeo channel or my 2nd YouTube channel.
My review on the A77 won’t be out for a few weeks.
I am also trying to figure out of the Sony A77 has an audio AGC ‘automatic gain control‘ but I have not figured that out yet. I am also learning how to focus this thing which is harder than I thought.
I am using two softboxes at 5300K white balance in this video. The hair light is at 2900k.

I can’t wait, hopefully you can do a comparison to the Canon systems!
The hot shoe on the A77 looks kind of funny. Can it accept a Rode Video mic?
@Mike yes it can accept a Rode mic but I am having problems trying to figure out how to control it.
Hi,
I have a question about the Sony A77, does or doesnt have clean HDMI output and the output is 4:2:2 10bit 1920×1080?
I hope to see the answer in your next complete reviewe.
Thanks in advance
@Sotiris I am not sure how to test that, can you provide a procedure for me?
Well, at first you need to look if the HDMI is clean which means that in the monitor you only watch the image without any menu infos…
Second you can find out the resolution of the HDMI output from your monitor informations, you see in general when you connect a HDMI cable to your HD TV-Monitor it tells you the resolution 1080p, 1080i, 720p and in some cases the chroma subsampling.
Thanks
@Sotiris here is your answer in video form about the HDMI output:

Thank your so much Dave. Unfortunatly it doesnt have clean HDMI output, so I can’t rec video in an external video recorder.
Best regards
The image is a bit muddy compared to the Canon, do you know why?
Sony doesnt want people to have access to higher video quality, because they have other more expensive products for that. Pure bad marketing for costumer that they want to make their ideas reality with “few” dollars. So Sony will lost for me.
Dave to focus the camera for Video, I set the camera to auto focus and 10 second delay and allow the camera to focus on me and take a picture. After the picture is taken I set a marker on the floor and set the camera to manual focus and back to movie mode. Once you hit record you simply go back to your marker and conduct your video. This method is easier if you have a chair to sit in to keep an accurate focus. When you stand up its easy to move in and out of focus depending on how wide your aperture is.
Um why is there such huge blocky noise in shadows? And yes this does look muddy, does the original look like that or is it video compression? Cause if the original looks like that I don’t think your setting your camera right. I get far cleaner video then that. For u Indy shooters that want a real Dslr video cam forget the Sony and canon.. They are good for stills but junk for video. Get a gh2. I’ve owned all three cams and the gh2 demolishes thes other cams with manual sound levels, full manual controls with autofocus, clean hdmi, no recording time limit, totally silent lens while
Autofocusing, etc
@Aaron I am not sure why, mostly likely it is because I just got the camera and don’t know how to use it.
I don’t think there is gain control. That is one of the cons of this camera.
As for the muddiness, that could be the -3 contrast. Personally, I thought the standard picture style was best. I know how scene modes work for stills, but I have no experience with using them for video.
As for focusing, what happens if you just let the camera auto focus? I thought that was one of the big advantages of the A77 is the continual phase detection auto focus in video mode.
