Digital Calibration Target and picking music out before shooting.
I am working on my first real estate video, and from the condo I am filming I created this video about using the Digital Calibration Target and picking music out before shooting.
Once I am done editing the real estate video I will make sure to share it here with everyone. It might take me a couple of weeks to finish it because I am editing something else right now.
Breckenridge is just an amazing place in the summer, I think I got some great shots of the condo and the town as well. I also did about 6 time lapses, I am excited to see how they came out.

What gear did you use to make the video? And what lens? There’s not a whole lot for me to do out but I have been helping a guy with some realty videos in Hays but all I had was my T2i, a wal-mart tripod, meh, a rode videomic with no stands or extensions, and I was using the kit lens because the only other lens I own is 50mm. Since work is short out here while I accumulate gear I have been working on his time, but I’m having trouble communicating how much work, and money, goes into the videos he wants to emulate. He likes to be in them as well which makes audio difficult without a stand. (BH was out of extensions but I have one now.) Anyway, since it is all I’m doing right now I figured I’d gear up for this as much as possible. Although my camera was stolen and I need to replace that as well :/
Will there be a link to your final real estate video, when its all done?
@Bjarke yes I will posted it when I am done in a few weeks.
Looks like a good shoot. Looking forward to the final edit.
Hi Dave,
Love your site.
I just did a real estate video for personal use and as a shooting exercise. My wife and 2 kids had the opportunity for a home exchange with a builder in Los Cruces, New Mexico wanting to survey the market in my area (Montgomery, TX). His house was perfect for the shoot/vacation.

I found the exercise very challenging since everything is for the most part static. The Konova slider helped but I know to much of that would be well…. to much. If I was to do it over it might stage something with a little movement that adds to the aesthetics while at the same time adding to the story. I think a real estate type piece could definitely engage a prospective buyers imagination much more than what I’m seeing on many real estate websites. The music, subtle movements, light and shadows tend to transport the viewer in ways a cluttered MLS listing never will.
Equipment I used was the 5D mark iii, Konova slider, Tokina 11-16 f 2.8, Canon 35 f1.4, Canon 70-200 ii IS USM (on opening shot), Manfrotto 755XB with 503HDV head
Thanks for sharing with us through your blog!

Dave: Sorry I have fallen behind on watching your videos but was excited to see that you were shooting architecture. One thing I remember seeing suggested on another site. (Forgive me if it was on your site
is to bring along your own daylight balanced fluorescence to replace any tungsten bulbs that may be in the space. WIll definitely help when trying to nail white balance.
@Randy Hey Randy! I have done that before but there were way too many lights and types of lights to do that.
Hey Dave, I would love to see the finished product! As a Realtor who is about to include DSLR videos into my listing package, I’m excited to see what you come up with in the finished product. Cheers
Dave, what was the title of the music you used?
Thanks!
@Alex, “Life is good”
Would love a digital calibration target tutorial! A little depth would be awesome. Maybe as a subscriber only video?
@Stephanie I have a whole video on it in my T4i beginners guide that will come out soon.
Hey Beene, that was an absolutely awesome video. The shots and production are real standouts. Love it! “The music, subtle movements, light and shadows tend to transport the viewer in ways a cluttered MLS listing never will”. Amen!
Aloha, John.
very kind comments John. Thank You.
Check out Dave s Konova slider review. Lots of good info on this very affordable slider and tips on using it.

And if you like long exposure astrophotography

lots of good tech info on night shooting. I used pretty much the exact settings recommended by Dave for all the night shots.
Hallo Dave,
I appreciate your work, your website and your tutorials. You have a great camera work and technique but on the editing side, there are some problems unfortunately. I saw the finished shoot and my eyes are bleeding,
- make your cut invisible
- make your cut motivated
- each shoot must be motivated. Never show legs, hands, children, people without showing their faces
- always cut one moment before audience expected your cut.
- never – ever – ever cut on music. Never
- cut on motion
- think the story before starting the cut.
- never jump between day / night and day again, interior / exterior and interior again. Show the inside, show the outside and the neighboring sites.
- wide – close – close not wide – wide – close
@Leo thanks I will have to keep all that in mind for next time!
