Podcast with Michael Andrew who makes photography training DVD’s.
I am excited to have Michael Andrew from MichaelTheMaven.com on my 8th podcast.
Michael is a professional wedding photographer who also has created a bunch of training DVD’s such as crash courses on DSLR’s. He has one on the T2i. I have not purchased any of his DVD’s but the sample lessons he has on MichaelTheMentor.com are pretty good.
And since I am thinking about creating my own DVD’s for DSLR video I thought it would be fun to have Michael on to ask him a few of questions.

Questions I Asked
- What is your background in DSLR video and how did you get started doing training DVD’s?
- I do a lot of filming of myself without help (I am guessing you do as well), and I use the EOS software which is wonderful for getting myself in focus, but my screen on my laptop is not so great and I am always overexposing myself. Do you have any tricks getting the exposure right (do you use 18% gray cards for example).
- I seem to get a lot of moire patterns appearing from shirts in my videos, have you run in to this yourself and what do you do to minimize this effect?
- When you are just shooting pictures of your fast moving kids (if you have any) what mode do you normal shoot in? AV?
- What picture style do you shoot your videos in and why? Do you do a lot of post processing within your NLE if you shoot flat, if so what is your workflow for adding back the contrast, sharpness etc.
- Right now all my lens are naked and I would like to get some filters to protect them. What do you suggest for a person that does a lot of video?
- Camera strap?
- Nice bag for my camera?

I loveeeeee Micheal Andrews. He’s the first instructor I fully understood histograms from

Another wonderful interview. I would like to offer a thought re: HDSLR help to your viewers.
Michael Andrews (as he mentioned at the beginning) is a teacher. It is evident when listening to and watching his videos that he has zeroed into making people understand the point he is making. He is proud of his teaching ability which overrides his photo experience.
He is not giving us information about cameras and video… he is making us understand what is actually happening.
As a retired police officer I can tell you how important it is to be able to communicate an ‘instruction’ to your listener.
You are on the road to helping guys like myself ‘ease’ into a world of a new complexity.
Keep at it, Dave.

You need to check out his videos. I have his T2I crash course and it is soooooo crazy comprehensive and production quality is great. To get a 3 and 1/2 hour DVD for $35 bucks is a crazy good deal.
