3 months ago I got to shoot behind the scene footage for some commercial ad spots.
Sterling-Rice Group (an ad agency in Boulder CO) was kind enough to let me film BTS footage of their “Pain Fairy” ad spots. It was great to see an entire team working together as I floated around independently trying to be quiet as possible and not getting in their way. These ‘guys’ put in long hours away from their families, so I wanted to capture those moments doing what they love best – being creative. I thank them for the opportunity, and hope I represented them well.
I shot the BTS video below on the Canon T2i.
I used my Canon T2i and Konova Slider to film this about 3 months ago. I also used Luke Neumann’s color presets on most of these shots.
You can watch all the commercials below – they were shot on the Canon 5D Mark II.

I think yours was better than theres! lol No shallow depth of field…
Good job!
Hi,
Yours video is a lot better than theirs,
why they didnt hire you to do that?
Can’t say I agree with the first commercial, they seem to condone taking aspirin killers and mixing it with dental work. Bad idea bad before or after dental work.
Take only what your dentist says for pain relief kids.
I wish I had a crew like this when I shoot adds…lol. I rely a lot on stands and clamps. It’s usually just me, my camera, a few lights, and talent. I comfortably script, film, and edit about 4-8 60 second spots a month.
how much do you think a commercial like this would cost?
Dave
That was a great job. It is fun to see the ‘behind the scenes’ on how the ‘pros’ do it! The slider really looked good and as usual, you video is so crisp and clear. I am learning and following along with you. Just jumped to Premiere Pro.
I also had the opportunity to take a few shots ‘behind the scenes’ as my daughter filmed a television commercial. http://vimeo.com/18830649 They used the 5D as well. There is also a link in the post to the final spot if you are interested. You may have seen it a couple months ago. Thanks Dave!
Good work Dave!
Looked great, Dave.
Slider shots looked excellent and the pacing of the editing was well done.
Great footage Dave!
I’m diggin the slider shots!
OK, I think the day I can get shots like Dave’s I’ll officially declare myself a pro, oh, and thank him of course : )
They are not “photographers”. Only producers commercial film.
Your film is way better. Better light, better camera movement and better edition.
Dave, I’ve been a casual follower of your blog, but this video deserves special kudos. You made them look like a crack, and focused crew! Your video has a lot of flair and great drama. Great use of the slider and nice compositions. Well done!
What lens did you use?
Hello, I do believe your blog may very well be obtaining web browser compatibility concerns. As i check out your blog site in Chrome, that appears great although when launching inside Internet explorer, they have some overlapping. I simply wanted to provide a rapid brains upward!
