I need ideas on the best ways to run a test.
Since I am learning a new NLE (PremiereCS5) I want to find out what the best settings are for exporting my movies out to the web are. So I thought that I would run a ton of tests on all the different render settings that I can think of and see which one looks the best for the web.
What I would like to do is create perhaps a 30 second video with 7 different clips that stress my DSLR to it limits to see how well it plays on the web.
Since I am just an advanced amateur at this I would like everyone’s feed back on the best way to run these tests before I launch into this lengthy processes.
I want video clips that I think will stress out the export process so I can easily detect which one is the best. These clips would be similar to Zacuto’s Great Camera Shootout of 2010.
- “Low Key” one bulb with candle
- Green screen test – fast moving hand with gradient background
- Fast random motion (rapids)
- Text in box far away – Screen captures after rendering (resolution test)
- Color tests (Girl standing next to flowers) Color bars
- “High Key” Back lit scene
- Fast moving computer graphics. Also still text with clean edges
Originally when I first thought of this test I wanted to go big and ask some of the DSLR big wigs in the industry to judge the winners.
However I came to the conclusion that having the big wigs judge wouldn’t work. Why? Because I would like to sell the results and all the test renderings. Now I realize I am going to get some people asking that I do this for free, and I would love to do it for free, but hey I would like this site to be more than just a hobby site for me.
I need ideas on the best ways to run this test, so I am open to your input if you would like to participate.
I am looking for suggestions like:
- Shoot it in a super flat setting and color in post.
- Only do 1080p footage
- Do this for the top three: Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas
- Review not only what ends up on the web but what gets directly exported from the NLE.
Thanks!
Update – Free Pass to the Results
Thanks for everyone’s help. I realize I am asking for something with nothing in return, so for anyone that provides a suggestion on how to best administer the test or provide their own settings that they would like in the test I will provide a free pass to the results (non DVD, just digital download). The first one I will be doing will be on Premiere CS5 only, but if you like you can give me your Vegas or FCP settings too here.
Thanks again for your help.

Your wanting suggestions on working with dslr footage in finalcut?
@Evan I am looking for suggestions on the best way to administer the tests. I would like to do Finalcut after I do it for Premiere and Vegas. Sharing your best rendering settings would help. To be honest I have no idea if FC only has one way of exporting but I know that Premiere and Vegas have a ton of ways you can render.
Yes there are several ways to export out of FCP.
1. If you want a full quality output form the timeline then you can just export a quicktime movie (u can also use this method to export a reference movie), which uses the settings of the timeline to export the movie. If you want to compress that output for the web, dvd, etc you would normally go through compressor. This is where it can get confusing if you have never used compressor before. Compressor is equivalent to Adobe media Encoder.
2. You can also export the timeline from FCP straight into compressor.
Ill look up my export settings I use for the web/youtube
hey dave, i did these videos with my t2i. let me know what you think. thanks

This is my Premiere Settings for upload Vimeo .
Format – H.264
Profile – Main
Level – 3.1
VBR 1 pass (5,8)
Audio 44.1kHz – 128 bitrate
Thats all, pretty perfect and cleaner image and reasonable capasity.
If you want set to profile – “Best” and increase Target bitrate.
Everything working pretty perfect . . .
Cheers . .
So, you want us to GIVE you our rendering settings, and then you will SELL us back your results?
Please Brian, every thing that might end up on DVD for sale has been offered freely and sometimes people like a hard copy for TV use while sitting comfortably on the couch with their camera.
If I knew the best settings I would gladly and freely give them up for Dave as his video’s have helped me tremendously.
Just my two cents worth here.

@charly looks good, how are you getting the vignetting effect?
@dave, thanks. i use after effects cs5 for that. just use the ellipse tool and feather it out. im a fan of your site. any way i can help, just ask,
Brian – Seriously?!! This guy is giving out TONS of free information, putting in HOURS upon HOURS to make these video’s, and all you got is that petty, bullshit comment?!
@brain, why dont you relax homie. by the way where can we see these videos with the top secret rendered settings?
@charly I just started on the tests, I think it might take some time, I want to try everything. Believe when I am done you will know about it because it will be all over the site.
Dave, thanks for this website!
I use Fcp to edit and export videos in quicktime full quality, then i use the free software “mpeg streamclip” to compress for the web (avaible on mac & pc). settings are:
-export in mpeg 4 – H264
-quality 100%
-Data rate: between 3000 and 5000kbps. From this depends the quality and the file size
-Sound mpeg4 aac 160kbps
Here you can check some of my 550d tests and videos: http://www.vimeo.com/user4057633/videos
Hey!
Really looking forward to the results. This will be incredibly helpful for beginners. When I first started, I ended up with a 9 gb, 2 minute quicktime .mov that would barely playback on my MBP.
I’m currently using H.264, 80% quality, 3.5k/6.5k w/ audio @ 44.1k 128kbps.
As a side comment, I use very similar settings in After Effects, unless I’m creating something to use in Premiere and I need an alpha channel. I experimented with different settings, but found that using the Lossless +Alpha preset to be very easy to use. I was frustrated by the file sizes (especially when sending videos to other people), but the files actually compress quite well so it wasn’t that big of an issue.
Hi Dave,
Love the site really helps out!!. I been racking my brain for hours and experimenting w/ exports settings for cs5. I don’t like the vimeo preset. Everyone seams to have a different answers. Any help would be great. I also shot at 30fps for smoother pans and when i uploaded to youtube and vimeo I couldnt figure out why there were suttering so much for me on playback. Then I uploaded 24fps or 23.976 or whatever and the footage was alot smoother on both vimeo and youtube playback. Took me 2 days to figure that out
I was changing bit rates proflie’s etc but the 30fps was causing me issues on playback. I guess for me and my computer vimeo did not play 30fps back well. I have a 1st gen unibody core duo w/4 gigs ram so maybe the new quad cores would handle playback better. I really would like to know the best export settings from cs5. I’m unsure about bit rates i guess. your video’s look great on youtube btw. I just see some people’s films and they look very good. I’m getting alot of artificats in the shadows and it just does not look nearly as good as when I play the raw footage before bringing it into cs5.
This video post is truly great, the echo quality and the picture quality of this film post is in fact remarkable.
Thanks a bunch for sharing this with all of us you actually know what you are speaking approximately! Bookmarked. Kindly additionally consult with my site =). We may have a link trade contract between us
